Today's Birthday, May 8: US basketballer Kemba Walker (1990 - ).
This year's NBA off-season season shapes as a career-altering one for Charlotte Hornets point guard Kemba Walker as he goes into the last season of his four-year, $48 million contract.
The two-time NBA All-Star was again forced to sit out another post-season as his struggling Eastern Conference franchise finished with a 36-46 record and out of the playoffs.
Walker, visibly emotional in March after becoming the Hornets' all-time leading scorer, recently told the Charlotte Observer he was "tired of not being in the playoffs" and would make a call on his future once the franchise hired a new general manager.
Born in the New York City borough of The Bronx, Walker attended Rice High School in Harlem.
The highlight of his high school career came in 2007, steering the team to a win at Madison Square Garden over the Derrick Rose-led Simeon Career Academy of Chicago.
The McDonald's All-American was then recruited to the University of Connecticut's top-end basketball program.
In his third year at UConn over the 2010-11 season, Walker exploded as an NBA prospect - averaging 23.5 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists - catapulting the Huskies to the Big East Championship and NCAA Division I title as the tournament's most outstanding player.
His break-out college season meant the 6-foot-1 Walker was drafted with the ninth pick of the 2011 NBA Draft by the then Charlotte Bobcats.
The rookie unseated injured veteran DJ Augustin as the team's starter during the miserable 2011-12 lockout season as the young Bobcats posted the worst winning percentage in NBA history with seven wins and 57 losses.
He upped his average to 17.7 points for the 2013-14 season and along with Al Jefferson helped the Bobcats to the seven-seed before being swept in the first round by LeBron James' Miami Heat.
Again, Kemba Walker's newly-renamed Hornets fell to the Heat in the first round of the 2015-16 playoffs.
The diminutive scorer hasn't been back to the playoffs since, but is finally being recognised as one of the association's best guards with back-to-back All-Star selections in 2017 and 2018.
Hornets owner Michael Jordan openly floated trading Walker at the trade deadline in January for note.funbbs.me salary cap relief.
