Talking about the Rs 22,000 crore worth of cane dues in 2014-15, he said, in order to remove worries of sugarcane growers, he asked sugar mills to install machinery to produce ethanol, which could be used as an alternative to petrol and diesel.
'If sugar prices fall, produce ethanol. We won't let cane growers die,' he added. 'The welfare of Uttar Pradesh cannot be ensured without welfare of eastern UP,' he said, adding that the Centre is spending crores of rupees on rail and road networks in that area.
